Where are you located?

We’re at 3916 Vero Rd, Suite F, Arbutus, MD 21227. We are near the junction of Vero Rd and Joh Ave, directly across from UPS, and in the building connected to Dish Network.

What is CrossFit?

The Short Answer: Constantly Varied Functional Movement performed at High Intensity.

This does not mean we do random crap as fast as possible and hope we don’t die. It means we vary our workouts so that we can prepare for many different physical challenges, focusing on highly functional movements like squating, lifting, pushing, and pulling. We use many movements to work these in many ways. Every athlete (if you come in, you’re an athlete) strives to work at an intensity which is challenging for them, but also able to be undertaken safely. We aim to be Virtuoso’s, in that everything we do should be as skilled as possible.

Is CrossFit right for me?

For 95% of the people we’ve worked with, CrossFit has been of significant benefit to their health and fitness goals. We train as generalists using workouts that are always challenging and fun, so that we don’t get bored. Our athletes want to come to the gym not because they feel guilty if they don’t, but because they enjoy the experience. We make sure that everyone is educated and challenged according to their needs, and you are never held to the standard of someone else. We build on what you can do, safely and effectively.

So…you are NOT too fat. You are NOT too old. You are NOT too out of shape. Don’t make excuses; just try it. (We offer a free intro class!) The worst scenario is…you don’t like it!

What? Oh that 5% has only been made up of people who refuse to generalize their workouts, such as some marathon runners and other sports specialists. They were a lot of fun to work with, but as elite athletes they know what helps their sport. No hard feelings and we still get to hang out with them sometimes!

Which programs require the Foundations Course?

Only those attending CrossFit classes are required to complete the Foundations course (or equivalent).

The CombatFit Martial Arts and KickFit Cardio Kickboxing classes DO NOT require Foundations completion.

I have experience with CrossFit already. Do I have to go through the Foundations on-ramp program?

Our Foundations course is designed to give you the knowledge you need to participate in our daily workouts safely and with maximal benefit. If you can demonstrate proficiency in the 9 foundational CrossFit movements (i.e. if you can “test out” of the course), then we will waive the Foundations course and you can sign up for a regular membership immediately.

The Nine Foundational CrossFit Movements:

  1. Air Squat
  2. Front Squat
  3. Overhead Squat
  4. Deadlift
  5. Sumo Deadlift High Pull
  6. Clean
  7. Press
  8. Push Press
  9. Jerk

Test-out is on a Pass/Fail basis. You must demonstrate every move with a minimum of proficiency before receiving a Passing grade. You will have two attempts at each movement, and will use light weight (usually just the Olympic bar) throughout. You may not perform test-out movements with a PVC pipe.

We may – on a case by case basis and dependent upon performance during test-out – allow a new member to attend fewer Foundations courses at summarily reduced cost in order to fill in knowledge and skill gaps. This is not guaranteed and the evaluation of the testing trainer is final.

Why are your prices higher than bigger gyms? What am I getting for my money?

The current fitness standard is the Glogo-gym: a big gym with lots of machines, lots of members, and generally minimally trained staff. They tend to charge $50/month for access to the equipment, a pat on the head, and a hearty “good luck”. With hundreds or thousands of members, they don’t need to care at the individual level. As long as your payments go through, they don’t really tend to care if you show up.

On the other end, you can get all the personal touches by paying for a personal trainer. They’re responsible for helping you make and reach your goals, making sure you perform movements safely, and helping you stick to your program. These services can run as high as $100 per hour!

This is where CrossFit Catonsville comes in. We offer high quality, personalized training to small groups of athletes (usually 5-8/class) in a structured environment. Every class is led by an experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable trainer who will teach you what you need to know to participate in the workout safely and effectively. If you have any troubles, the trainer is there to help you make the necessary changes to ensure you remain safe and see results.

Compare the prices, assuming we want 3 hours of workout each week and some motivational support:

  • At a large gym, you might spend $50/month ($4.16/hour) but you get no training, no follow-up, no assistance, and no one cares if you show up.
  • With a personal trainer, even at a low cost of $60/hour you would end up spending $720/month for those 3 hours. You should be getting follow-up, education, and motivation BUT you also have to compete for prime time slots every week.
  • At CrossFit Catonsville, you would pay $12.08/hour for personal attention in every workout, the community of a small class of friendly athletes, education in every movement, coaches who not only know your name but will call you if you stop coming, and no competition for training times.

So why are our prices higher? Because we’re worth it. This may be crazy, but call us maybe?
